How to make a gathered dress
In its simplest form the gathered dress is a straight tube that is gathered in at the chest by multiple rows of elastic to create an empire-line style.
The dress can also be made to flare out, so that the skirt area hangs in folds. It can be made from light fabric that keeps its shape, or with heavier or floppier fabric that hangs down with gravity. The top edge of the dress can be shaped to create a flattering curve above the chest. The dress can be made to sweep the floor, or so short that it becomes a top. It can be made with or without straps. It can be finished with elastic at the bottom to create a bubble shaped skirt.
