Shop layout
A massive premises to house a massive amount of stock in a generally accessible and efficient way. Fabric is on rolls arranged upright in containers, on shelves that reach the ceiling and are accessed with a hook on a long pole, and in the back room on flat reels stacked horizontally.
Stock
The range of fabrics is extensive, covering all the basics and much, much more. There are flowery fabrics lining the walls in the main room plus a huge range of patterned silks. There is fabric that you would never begin to dream existed. There is a large back room full of suiting, wool and a huge variety of unusual heavier fabrics good for trousers, coats and cloaks.
The shop also has a huge and absorbing range of basic and unusual buttons that are easy to view and access, and a whole room devoted to trimmings - including zips, bias bindings and unusual decorative trimmings - with one dedicated member of staff who really knows her haberdashery. The shop also sells zips, thread, Dylon dyes and sewing patterns.
Customer service
Dalston Mill employs a fairly big team and all staff are attentive. There is generally someone close to hand to help you out. Sometimes there is a feeling that you are being pushed into buying, but of course you don’t have to be pushed into anything.
Staff knowledge
All staff seem to be extremely knowledgeable about the stock.
